Feeling unmotivated

Image
Last Monday, Grace and I submitted our take on the project brief that Jaywing gave us. The aim of the brief was to get young people to visit and donate to Historical Palaces. As a charity, the Historical Royal Palaces don't receive any fundings. Instead, they relied very heavily on the public's donation in order to keep the place maintained and open. However, the problem was that young people don't go to such places. There are more options than ever to keep themselves entertained, so why would young people today visit these old houses? How can we engage and motivate young people to visit?       This is our response to the brief:      Posters of people's reaction:       A gruesome scenario will be narrated.       This could be played as a Spotify ad, or at locations relating to the scenario. However, after 5 days, we've received an update from Jaywing saying that we've not got the job. It seems that this idea has been ...

Jaywing Leeds

The interview with Jaywing went pretty well! As a matter of fact, they were incredibly nice to us. As it was our first job interview together as a creative team, Grace and I spend some time preparing questions and doing research about the company. Despite being a small agency, Jaywing combines data and creativity into their ideas. What I liked about their agency is that they dug deep into their consumer insight. The insight became the foundation of their ideas. It didn't feel that foreign to me. All the terms that they used at the agency are what we used in class as well. One of the campaign that I thought was interesting was the First Direct campaign. It touches on a boring topic: 'Mortgage' which people struggle to understand sometimes. Banks can be terrifying when one is unfamiliar with the terms. Despite some technical issues, what they liked was the thought process behind some of our work. They also asked each of us to go through the project that we liked in particul...

Someone noticed us!

Image
I woke up to 2 emails one morning. One email saying that the company will not be moving forward with our application. But the other email came as a surprise. I've send our portfolio to Jaywing Leeds and didn't hear from them for a while. Seeing how there was no response, I thought that maybe our stuff weren't so good. So, I was really happy to receive an email from them saying that they would like to have an interview with us. At the beginning, I thought to myself if there was some problem with our portfolio because we weren't getting any response back. It is nice that both Dan and Matt from Jaywing liked it. While I'm not sure what to expect, but next Tuesday would be my first job interview. Bit nervous for it. In the meantime, Grace and I have working and building out portfolio together as a team. We list down some household brands and tried to find a problem to solve. At the moment, the brand that we are working on is Freddo, the chocolate bar. Based on our res...

Charlene + Dan Portfolio Review

Image
From the last email sent, it seems that Charlene and Dan were interested to do a book critic with us. Honestly, I was not expecting anything after the final presentation with them, so the email that came was truly a pleasant surprise. Grace and I then decided to spend the weekend putting our book together and then follow up to arrange a time. While putting things together, it seems that apart from the Yahoo! presentation, we didn't do much together. I suggested to pick 3 projects each from our own portfolio instead.  After going back and forth with all the emails, it was decided that we would have the critic on the 27th May at 10am. This is the first time we are going as a team so I'm really curious what Charlene and Dan would say. They started off by asking us what are our plans now that we graduated and how we plan on moving forward with what we have. I told them that we did not get much response despite sending loads of email and loads of application. The closest we've g...

New Portfolio

Image
With the feedback from Young Creative Council, I've made some changes to my portfolio.  It's not a major change but I thought that I could perhaps add more personality. Apart from my Youtube channel, I do enjoy drawing some graphic illustrations. But, it is not something that I am very passionate about. It usually happens when I'm feeling it. The kind of illustrations that I like are somewhat similar to the Artisan Drinks. I heard it is called Art Deco and it was really popular during the 1920s and 30s. But, I prefer to film and edit my vlogs because I'm always on the phone. The thought of being able to capture that moment is very precious to me. Because if I missed that moment, it is very hard to go back again. That's why my vlogs became a way of looking back at the memories.      Main page of portfolio          Passion Project Each image is a screenshot of my vlogs. I really hope to capture more even though I'm graduating. As an inte...

Droga 5 Charlene + Dan

Image
Last blog post? I don't think so. Writing on this blog is very therapeutic. It has helped to pen down a lot of my thinking and concerns. Based on the last presentation Grace and I had, we were happy to receive a follow-up email from Charlene. I was not expecting anything but it seems that she is happy to have a book crit with us. Although we did not get the placement, I find that someone who noticed us is half the battle won.  In the meantime, Grace and I will be putting together a portfolio. It is very interesting to see how everything would turn out eventually. I've never imagine us to be partners but I honestly do not mind.  To be fair, I felt peer-pressured to find a partner initially. To go for book crits alone is daunting, and the fact that some of the creatives from Young Creative Council has been stressing on finding a partner. It makes everything even more daunting. This has been on my mind for quite a while. Perhaps, with a partner, I would feel less lonely. B...

Video Critics Tuesday

Image
Today was video critics. Each person has about 30 mins to talk and go through their portfolio. I spoke to Tony Snow (freelancer) and Elise Smidt (BBDO Switzerland). At the beginning, I was really really nervous about it. Elise was the first person I spoke to and she told me that I was the first person in video critics to use Behance as a portfolio. I don't know if that is a good thing or not. But still, I introduced myself as a junior art director looking for a copywriter to land a placement. 30 minutes of waiting for a bus seem like a long time. But 30 mins for a video critic was definitely not enough. Very unfortunately, we only had time for 3 or 4 projects. But from what I gathered is that in general:  Elise said that 'People in the UK like to hire personality. A portfolio with personality is definitely more interesting. Try and incorporate some of yourself into it.' Perhaps my Behance portfolio feels a little too cold at the moment? I only have my work and nothing about...
